Technology Lending - Current

Date of Last Review: September 2025

Evans Library provides a variety of technology items and equipment that are available for loan to the following patrons:

  • Current Florida Tech Students
  • Florida Tech faculty or staff
  • Burrel College of Medicine students
  • ELS students (at staff’s discretion)

Users must be in good standing and present a valid Florida Tech ID Card when borrowing an item.

Technology lending is not available for alumni or community patrons.

Technology Lending Policy

  • Equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Items may not be reserved in advance.
  • Loan periods vary depending on the device. Please refer to the Technology Lending Service page for a list of technology items and their checkout periods.
  • You must use your own Florida Tech ID when borrowing technology. You may not borrow equipment on behalf of another person.
    • You are personally responsible for returning all equipment safely back to the front desk. Full replacement cost of a lost, damaged or stolen item will be charged to the account the item is checked out to.
  • When borrowing items, please bring broken equipment or other issues to the attention of library staff immediately.
  • Please take good care of all borrowed equipment - Never leave items unattended or exposed to the elements, including direct sunlight or water.
  • Patrons cannot check out multiples of the same item (e.g. two laptops, two calculators, two identical chargers).
    • Multiple items from different categories (e.g. a camera, a tripod, and a mount) are fine to borrow.
  • Patrons cannot renew technology online or over the phone. All technology must be renewed in person so that front desk staff can verify that the equipment is still in good condition.
    • Renewals are not guaranteed and are always at the discretion of staff. If the iDesk is low on a particular item, renewal is at staff's discretion.
  • Do not return technology equipment in a book return drop (this can damage fragile electronics).
  • When returning technology equipment, please allow time for library staff to check the device for damage and verify that all of the components have been returned, e.g., manual, power cords, USB cords, etc.
  • If tech lending items go into Overdue status, library privileges will be suspended until the item is returned.

Damaged and Lost Equipment Policy

  • As the borrower:
    • You are personally responsible for safely returning all technology lending items checked out to you.
    • You are also liable for any damage to library items that were checked out to you.
  • You will be charged full repair or replacement cost if the equipment is damaged, lost or stolen while it is checked out to you.
  • If you lose or break a component while borrowing an item (e.g. charger to a laptop you have borrowed), you will be charged the cost of replacing that component.
    • If it is not possible to buy a replacement, you will be charged the replacement cost of the entire piece of equipment.
  • Technology equipment that is not returned to the library within two weeks past the original due date will be considered lost.
  • If you have checked out $100 or more worth of equipment and do not return it, we reserve the right to contact Student Conduct.

Financial Responsibility and Fines

Evans Library staff will always make an effort to contact borrowers regarding overdue items. Our priority is to provide equipment that everyone can equitably borrow, and we want to make sure overdue items are returned as fast as possible. All patrons will receive multiple notices regarding overdue items before their accounts are charged.

  • If there are special circumstances preventing you from returning an overdue item (such as being sick or travelling out of the country), please contact us immediately to avoid being charged.
  • Before your student account is charged for a lost or broken item, you will receive an email about the incoming charges.
  • Charges for items will be placed directly in your student account within five days of receiving notice.
    • Replacement cost will be assessed at the current market price at the time the item is identified as lost.
    • Please be aware that charges in your account may count as a financial hold and prevent you from registering for classes, graduating, or ordering a transcript.
  • You may pay the charges through your PAWS account or the cashier’s office in L3 Harris Commons.
