Where High Achievers Thrive: Academic Success & the Evans Library

By: Bill Bowman

It’s no secret that the library helps students succeed by providing them with the resources, assistance, and spaces they need to complete their research projects and class assignments, but that is far from the only thing we do to support academic excellence. Evans Library has always been devoted to helping our students at every stage of their academic journey.

This semester we will be presenting a workshop series focused on aiding graduate students and early-career researchers through the initial stages of the literature review all the way through the publication process:

  • Engineering and Science Librarian William Bowman kicks off the series, demonstrating how to evaluate and submit manuscripts to journals for publication.
  • Of course, you can’t write a research article without doing research first! Instruction Librarian Chelsea presents an introduction to research strategies using the library’s electronic resources and databases.
  • Our third workshop covers citation management and using various library resources to make the research and writing experience easier and more productive.
  • Closing out the Spring 2026 workshop series, the library’s formatting experts Kaylee Erdos and Kristin Heifner will teach graduate students the Florida Tech-specific formatting for their theses and dissertations.

Of course, the library hasn’t forgotten about our undergraduates and the importance of reaching out to our newest students. This year, the library worked with the director and faculty of the University’s First Year Experience (FYE) class to spice up students’ library assignment. After watching a series of videos recorded by the library’s wonderful Head of Instruction Chelsea Carroll, students completed a scavenger hunt combing the library, for books, electronic resources, and other useful materials. They even took selfies with their Personal Librarian!

Our freshmen learned research skills that will prove invaluable to them in the future. FYE students overwhelmingly rank the Evans Library as their favorite place on campus and the most valuable academic resource. We look forward to aiding these first-years through their entire academic careers, to senior showcase and beyond!

Florida Tech students need more than the outstanding in-person services and access to first-rate research the Evans Library provides: they also need top-notch technology. And the Library has them covered there as well. One of the Library’s most popular services is Tech Lending! Students can check out whatever technology they may need at our iDesk. From laptops and tablets to cameras and calculators to thumb drives and charging cables, Florida Tech students can find whatever they need to succeed in their classes.

Finally, because the Evans Library is recognized as the locus of academic excellence and success on campus and because we are such a popular student destination, the library is now home to Florida Tech’s brand-new Office of Student Advising. Emerging out of Florida Tech’s recent reaffirmation of accreditation with SACS, the Office of Student Advising works with students before they even step on campus to make sure they are taking the right classes and making the right steps to graduate on time.
