Instructional Programs Overview

Instructional Programs Teaching"Information literacy seems to be a phrase whose time has come. Instruction in information literacy will have to pervade every level of education and every course in the curriculum, from university historians' use of collections of online slave narratives to middle-school home economics teachers showing their students where to find reliable nutrition information on the Web."

The Library's instructional programs support the mission of the Library.

Information literacy is the ability to "recognize when information is needed" and to be able to "locate, evaluate, and use effectively" that information. Committed to meeting the information literacy needs of undergraduate and graduate students and the related instructional needs of the faculty, the Library's instructional programs team strives to meet the five general ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education and its additional discipline-specific standards. The ACRL standards are:

  1. The information literate student determines the nature and extent of the information needed.
  2. The information literate student accesses needed information effectively and efficiently.
  3. The information literate student evaluates information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system.
  4. The information literate student, individually or as a member of a group, uses information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.
  5. The information literate student understands many of the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and accesses and uses information ethically and legally.

Each instructional session offered by the Evans Library addresses one or more of these information literacy competencies.

Components of the Library's instructional programs are:

  • COM 2012, "Research Sources and Systems", a one-credit-hour course taught each semester by Library faculty
  • graduate research workshop, a three-module half-day workshop for graduate students who are involved in thesis or dissertation research or graduate-level coursework
  • course-integrated instruction, consisting of lectures designed to meet the research needs of students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate courses, across all Florida Tech disciplines
  • instructional materials, both print and online, that include an online tutorial and a virtual library tour
  • outreach to prospective students
  • displays that feature information resources and additional information about curriculum-related topics
